2019/2020Bake School in Cameroon

Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world.

Nelson Mandela

This was the biggest project the KH Foundation had taken on to date, and utilises our resources across two years.

We have always believed in Education. Ken’s parents invested in his, and he understood the privilege it gave him in this world. Not everyone is as lucky, particularly in third-world countries.

A school building program in Cameroon Africa caught our attention many years ago. Children squashed into over-crowded rural schools trying their best to learn, in buildings that leak, often blow down in heavy storms and have no sanitary facilities.  Short on text books and proper desks.

The idea of being able to make a difference to many children over decades, by providing them with clean, safe school buildings, proper sanitary facilities and an environment where the teachers can properly educate excites me. To help a few, but over time, hopefully many.

We partnered with a UK Charity Building Schools for Africa, who themselves partner with SHUMAS, a UN approved small local charity, meaning that every Euro donated to the school building project goes to the village and the local economy. We also chose this partnership as we liked their community involvement model. The local community also have to provide some funding (albeit small) and prepare the ground for building and source local materials. Local involvement and ownership is key, so that projects like this are a helping hand, and not a hand-out. This model is well designed and tested.

The building of the school began in the village of Bakéin the early summer of 2019, and was officially opened on the 5th November that year.
